Yikes, move over Lara Croft, there's a new babe in town and her name is Julie. As I said in my KISS Psycho Circus review, I am always a bit sceptical of games based on popular movies, comics, etc. but once again this one had me eating my words. Heavy Metal is getting some rave reviews and it deserves them. If you like 1st person action games, put this one on your Christmas List ... NOW!

Yeah, I know what you're thinking ... but can she cook?
The Game
The game is a first-person action adventure that is set 30 years after the events in the film "Heavy Metal 2000" but you won't need to have seen the film to play the game. Starting out in her home town of Eden, Julie hacks, slashes, shoots, stabs and slingshots her way through over twenty-five levels (and a whole bunch of costume changes).

Graphics and Gameplay
The game takes the Quake III engine and pushes it to the limit with some of the nicest environments ever seen in a computer game up to this point. The graphics are not only gorgeous, but on my system even at high resolutions didn't seem to bog down at all. Saving and restoring is quick and easy. The animation of Julie is slick too. They paid huge attention to Julie's movements whether she is walking (notice the way the hips and shoulders move in opposition), climbing, running, ducking and rolling, fighting, jumping, etc. Julie's outfit's are many and revealing, and tend to become even more so as they get ripped and tattered from fighting the baddies. Don't take my word for it, check out the screen shots above. She has a nice arsenal of weapons starting with the basics, a trusty sling, sword and shield and moving on up to flamethrowers, bazookas, etc. Right now it is single player only but since it uses the Quake III engine we can always hope that they decide to put out a multiplayer version. So to make a long story short, this game rocks, buy it!
The Demo
There is a great demo available that will let you try out a couple of different areas (and check out a couple of Julie's outfits). The demo is available from the site link below and also can be found on the PCGamer magazine CD (October Issue).
Final Words
Probably not suitable for younger players or people who think generously-endowed female characters in computer games are exploitive. Otherwise, it's a must-have.
